An Update On Aleksandra Karbowniczek

Almost a week has passed since the accident at Mary Jane Falls in Mt. Charleston. Aleksandra, who suffered a critical head injury from a falling rock while hiking with her husband Janusz, has been at the UMC Trauma Center for the past week where dozens of friends, relatives, and coworkers have visited her and offered their support. Aleksandra’s condition is stable, and each day she continues to respond more to physical tests, though she is still unable to follow commands. The doctors are still unsure of the prognosis and have said that they are taking a day-by-day approach, insisting that those who know Aleksandra stay patient. The rest of the Karbowniczeks remain hopeful, knowing that she will make a swift recovery without a doubt. It’s only a matter of time.

Janusz, Sebastian, and Alex would like to thank everyone once more for their undying support. They are especially thankful for everything that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has done to help by supplying the family a trailer outside of the hospital to rest and recover while Aleksandra heals. Many officers and coworkers have visited also, some who had never met Aleksandra before but wish to show their support. Overall, the LVMPD has ensured the Karbowniczeks are looked after, and they greatly appreciate it. The family would also like to thank the many family friends who continue to supply them with food, water, and general necessities during these tough times.

The tremendous amount of support has definitely made this past week bearable for the family. It is still unknown how long it will take before Aleksandra will make a complete recovery, but every new day continues to bring great news. The Karbowniczeks are very thankful for how many people care for her and how much they have made life easy for the family. For now, Janusz, Sebastian, and Alex ask that you continue to keep Aleksandra in your prayers. We’re all counting down to the day Aleksandra will open her eyes and the moment she does we’ll be sure to let everyone know.

Tragic accident at Mt. Charleston

On Sunday June 5, 2011, between 3 and 4 o’clock P.M., Aleksandra Karbowniczek was critically injured by a falling rock while spending the afternoon at Mt. Charleston with her husband Janusz Karbowniczek. After about 30 minutes, she was air lifted to UMC Trauma center where she is listed in critical condition fighting for her life. Aleksandra is surrounded by her husband Janusz, sons Sebastian (19) and Alex (16), her family Kasia, Zosia, Asia, Tadeusz and many friends and co workers and close family friends from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department along with many others who are close with the family.

The Karbowniczek family would like to thank the rescue team for their swiftness, coordination, and professionalism. Not a moment was wasted and the team worked perfectly despite windy conditions and flying a helicopter over 8000 feet in altitude. The team members risked their lives to save Aleksandra and acted without hesitation. Another team cut trees in the area where the accident occurred to ensure a pathway could be made off of the mountain trail in case the air lift was impossible. During all of this, a young woman from Mexico named Karina helped by calling 911 and offered her support with anything Janusz or the rescue team needed. She even offered her jacket to help keep Aleksandra from bleeding while staying very calm, refusing to panic, and ensuring communication continued between both sides. Janusz confessed that he could not believe that he was surrounded by Angels. The police officer who arrived at the scene was also very helpful in keeping the situation under control, keeping Janusz company at all times. When the helicopter began its flight to UMC Trauma, the officer helped secure Janusz’s vehicle and drove him straight to the hospital. Janusz was very thankful for the officer, saying that all he could think was that he “just met another wonderful human being.” The officer continued to remain supportive, offering fresh water and keeping Janusz informed as to what was going on.

When they finally arrived at the hospital, they were greeted by Janusz and Aleksandra’s two sons, Sebastian and Alex, many family friends from the Polish community, and family from Metro. Janusz was overwhelmed by the huge amount of support his family was being offered, whether it be the constant company that ensured not a single family member was alone for a fraction of a second or the comfort that each individual person that visited offered.

The first 10 hours at UMC were extremely difficult. Many of the doctors and nurses did not expect Aleksandra to survive for more than a couple hours, but the unbelievable team pushed past impenetrable barriers and experienced miracle after miracle. All who came to visit ensured that Aleksandra would remain in their prayers. Janusz says that he has never felt so much love in his entire life. Aleksandra continued to fight her part of the battle, overcoming impossible odds as each minute crept by, with no sign of surrender.

I’m still in shock the way this was handled. Even though there were so many points of potential failure, everybody continued to work perfectly. I have learned so much and my life has changed forever. I will never doubt that we all are just one great and magical family and I have gone through the most life experiences in such a short time. I will always believe in people and I know that true love is like an air surrounding us. I want to apologize for the heroes I have not mentioned in this article, but no one has been forgotten.

It is Tuesday June, 6 2011. Aleksandra is moving her feet, hands, and her eyes react to light. She is still unconscious but is doing so much better. She went through her first surgery and will go through a few more. Her mother will arrive in Las Vegas on Friday, where they will be reunited. Thank you everyone for all the immense support, it truly means so much for us and as we take each moment step by step, that light at the end of the tunnel becomes brighter and brighter.

We are very happy that there are so many people who care for Aleksandra as much as we do. If you would like us to relay a message or a prayer to Aleksandra or just show your support, feel free to sign the guest book at www.caringbridge.org/visit/alekskar. Thank you everyone.
